Contig Disk Defragmenter

About Contig

Contig is a defragmentation program owned by Sysinternals/Microsoft. There are various Windows NT hard disk defraggers in the market today including Winternals Defrag Manager. Disk fragmentation may lead to system crashes, PC slowdowns, delayed startups and shutdowns and many such problems. It is then the Contig comes to your rescue.

Whenever you remove a file from the hard disk an empty space is created. And as you write a new file the hard drive tries to fill in this empty space. And if the new file is larger than the empty space it is stored in another available space. Computers generally save the file in the first available space and not necessarily the entire file or folder in the single space. This is file fragmentation. The more fragmented your computer is the more time would it take to retrieve or store the file.

Working on Contig:

Defragging is the process of taking all the fragmented files and placing them at a single contiguous location on the hard disk. Contig is specially designed to defragment the individual files. It does not attempt to move the various files to the beginning of the partition. It is ideal for defragmentating the files that are often changed and get fragmented quickly. Contig is able to defragment these files in particular rather than the entire partition of the drive.

Most of the NT disk defraggers in the market are useful in performing the regular defragmentation of the disks but some files still may be left fragmented. Moreover it is difficult to ensure that the particular files which are frequently used are defragmented always. It is possible that these may remain fragmented due to specific defragmentation algorithms being used. Also if all the files are defragmented, a few get fragmented quickly due to inevitable changes done to the critical files. Most of the defrag softwares in the market have the only option to run the whole process all over again to make those files defragmented again. But Contig is the only single file defragger in the market which enables you to defrag the individual file quickly without running the whole program again.

Contig first scans the disk and determines the free space as well as location and size of those tracks. Then it locates the file to be defragmented. It evaluates the number of fragments the file currently consists of and then decides its optimization depending on the file size and the free areas available on the hard disk. And lastly if the file can be optimized it is then moved to the free spaces of the disk.

Features of Contig Defragmenting:
  • Contig is a perfect quick optimizing and defragging program enabling to defrag the files that are getting fragmented continuously.
  • It is a single-file defragmenter attempting to make the files contiguous on the disk.
  • Contig can defrag the existing file as well as create a new file with new name and size and optimizes it placing it aptly on the disk.
  • It is very safe to use as it doesn't cause disk corruption even if stopped in between. It is as it uses standard Windows defragmentation APIs.
  • Contig uses native Windows NT defragmentation support.
So, as your hard disk may be badly fragmented in the course of time defragmentation is greatly important for your system's optimization. And to save time and get the job done quickly just go for Contig.
